Bivalent Influenza vaccineAs far as we know there have been NO OUTBREAKS in the state of MD as of now, and no reason to panic. However, some kennel facilities in our area are requiring that dogs be vaccinated for both strains of Canine Influenza (H3N8 and H3N2).

We simply want to let you know we have the vaccines available for both H3N8 and H3N2 canine influenza at Indian Head Animal Hospital. Although vaccination can reduce the risk of a dog contracting canine influenza it may not all together prevent an infection, but it may reduce the severity and duration of clinical illness.

The canine influenza vaccine is a "lifestyle" vaccine, and is not recommended for every dog. In general, the vaccine is intended to protect dogs at risk for exposure to the canine influenza virus, which includes those that participate in activities with many other dogs or are housed in communal facilities (boarding, shelter grooming, daycare) particularly where the virus is prevalent. Dogs that may benefit from canine influenza vaccination include those that receive the kennel cough (Bordetella/parainfluenza) vaccine, because the risk groups are similar. More information
